'Synthetic fuels could replace crude oil in US'

SME Times News -- The US could eliminate the need for crude oil by using a combination of coal, natural gas and non-food crops to make synthetic fuel, suggest American researchers.

Besides economic and national security benefits, the plan has potential environmental advantages because plants absorb carbon dioxide to grow, according to researchers.

The US could cut vehicle greenhouse emissions by as much as 50 percent in the next several decades using non-food crops to create liquid fuels, the researchers said.

Synthetic fuels would be an easy fit for the transportation system because they could be used directly in automobile engines and are almost identical to fuels refined from crude oil. That sets them apart from currently available bio-fuels, such as ethanol, which have to be mixed with gas or

But only the private sector and not the US taxpayer should fund the transition from R&D to commercial scale production. The one positive way we will know that any R&D on synthetic fuels have been successful is when the private investment companies show up to utilize the results of the R&D.

PT Barnum said there's one born every minute. Not a bad idea but don't throw money at it just because it sounds good. Make them demonstrate it first then fine tune it.
