Proposed 10-cent gas tax derailed

San Francisco Chronicle -- Bay Area voters won't be asked this fall to pay at the pump to fill potholes, improve transit and reduce traffic congestion after an opinion poll found scant support for a 10-cent-per-gallon gas tax.

The poll, commissioned by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, concluded that just 43 percent of the 3,600 likely voters surveyed said they would vote for the tax, which would raise as much as $280 million a year to spend on transportation improvements throughout the region.

"Support for a 10-cent-a-gallon tax falls far short of two-thirds," the supermajority required for the measure to pass, said Ruth Bernstein, who works for EMC Research of Oakland, which conducted the poll in February. "Even in San Francisco (where it won 50 percent support), it was short of a majority."

Increase taxes when times are good, not when people are struggling to make a living with Barry's crappy economy. Just make sure the gas taxes are used for the repair or replacement of roads and bridges NOT dumped into the general fund for use on whatever someone's whim determines. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Looks like Bernstein and Haggerty are badly out of touch with reality. People are fed up of being taxed more with the passing of time and seeing politicians spend tax receipts without much accountability. Plus, a gas tax hits people multiple times. Any excuse to raise taxes. When Gasoline went from $2.00/gal to $4.00/gal. They are getting twice as much Sales tax anyway. So just regulate part of the additional Sales tax into road maint. etc. --State --Gasoline(¢/g) --Diesel(¢/g) --Other Florida /--- 4 /--- 4 /--- 30.4 “Other Taxes” column includes the state sales tax ($0.12) which is indexed to the CPI and decreased $0.001. The “Other Taxes” also include the average of county option taxes: 9th-cent tax (up to $0.01), Local Option Tax (up to $0.06), Additional Local Option (up to $0.05), and the State Comprehensive Enhanced Transportation System tax (ranges from $0.055 to $0.066).
