Probably less than half the time. I didn't travel around to little known destinations as much in 2009.

I didn't respond to this poll last week, and I didn't expect to still see here this week. So, I must say, I don't have one, don't need one, don't expect to buy one.

What I need to see is a new poll for the week beginning December 20th!

I use it mainly when I travel, during the weekends, etc. I still like to to different places while we still can afford it!

By coincidence I just bought one on ebay today, Garmin Nuvi 855, $150, I will be using it for road trips (points of interest), and notification of school zones, speed limits and congested traffic. Thinking of working part-time as delivery driver so it would come in handy there too.

NEVER.
Just another electronic distraction to cause accidents.
If you don't know where you are going & how to get there, try consulting an old fashioned paper map BEFORE YOU EVEN GET INTO THE VEHICLE.
Give your GRAY CELLs A LITTLE EXERCISE, you might be pleasantly surprised how much you do remember from the map session while you enjoy driving by "the seat of you pants" as the old saying goes.

Maybe, just maybe the GM is making a list of those who do NOT have a GPS so that we can be surprised with a GPS in the mail for Christmas? No?

Now, if it was a truly great question, why can't we vote on it the second time around?

seldom ,only if i ride w/someone using one ,i dont own one

GPS is built into my mind, dont need one 99% of the time

one time i got stuck in nowhere-land KANSAS! on the way back to Texas using US hwy 75........ miles of road w/nowhere to turn around and no landmarks) and it was dusk ,all i had to do was figure the sun drops into the SW part of the sky ,so i knew i wasnt going SOUTH (was going NORTH) so i pulled over and turned around ,remembered there was a gas station 5 miles back ,so i went back ,,found my way to where i made my mistake (75 breaks up at Us-400) ,so i went back to 75 south ,and got back home in Texas
all with no GPS and no atlas

indians use this sense of direction i beleive :)

He must be without power. No Internet access. Awful cold place to be without power. I grew up in Michigan, so I am not unfamiliar with weather in that part of the country.

I know, it's hard to formulate questions, but:
My answer would be:
(1) If I drive in my "home territory", about a 100 km radius: NEVER
(2) If I drive in lesser known territory: ALWAYS

I used a Garmin on a trip to Pittsburgh last year. It was a big help - most of the time. However, if you have a GPS device, you need to keep it updated! I had to ask a pedestrian for directions one time in order to get to my destination.

When I'm in an area where I'm familiar with the local roads, I'm "smarter" than my GPS receiver is. When I'm in unfamiliar territory it's way "smarter" than I am even with a good map. And I can interpret a map pretty well.

I've been driving the same route (6miles) to and from work for the last 26 years. I could do it blind folded.
vacations are planned ahead of time and I bring maps.
GPS units are great if you truly need one but, I think they're mostly a status thing.
