We don't have to have Starbucks, we do have the have gasoline to use and it affects everyone! I think there needs to be something done about these oil companies makings so much money, its terrible that the low income people have to shell out so much and give it to the greedy oil companies, such a shame!

How about a windfall profits tax on Starbucks? Their product costs a lot less to make than gasoline and costs a lot more per gallon.

I don't get it. How will a windfall profits tax result in lower prices for us?

Yes, but there has to be a plan in place to keep them from passing the increase to the consumer.

Hell, NO! Companies do NOT PAY taxes! They COLLECT taxes from US and pass them along to the government. The taxes get built into their prices. If their prices are too high, they go out of business. Corporate taxes are a major cause of unemployment.

Should there be a windfall profit tax on Microsoft when their profits go above a certain amount?
If you want to drive investment away from future expansion in an industry and make the product more scarce and expensive, then hit the industry with a windfall profit tax.

And how will enacting a windfall profits tax reduce the price of gasoline? It might actually increase it, as companies pass on the added costs to gas buyers. Meanwhile, our Congress would squander away any tax proceeds on pork barrel projects.

I think there should be a Windfall Profits Tax on MICROSOFT who has a real monopoly and who makes a much higher return on investment than any oil company.

No. Anyone who does not understand the fluctuations in gas prices has not bothered to read the world press and aquaint themselves with world reality. You will not get this information from television because they cannot put it in a ten second sound bite.

Absolutely, I see the wild swing in consumer gas prices w/ no reason. Modern fuel stations make their money on the high profit drinks and snacks just the same as movie theatres. So, the companys supplying the fuel are the ones reaping all the profit. Tax the heck out of them until they fall in line ...

I know its late to reply. But the windfall profits tax is a socialistic concept. Take money from one group and give to another. This is also known as communism and we know how that turned out. also think of Robin Hood.
A different look: the oil companies averaged a 9% ROI. Google, Yahoo had a 25% Gross Profit. Banks are at 22%. If we have to tax more, make sure you tax all of these 'abusers' of our hard earned money.

No, because companies shouldn't have a windfall profit tax. Because if they do have one then they are just going to charge the customer for to break even for windfall profit tax.

A windfall profits tax would be good for the national economy because it would put money back into Gov't coffers. However the average consumer would not see any benefit in gas prices and most likely the tax would be passed down to the consumer anyway. The shareholders would take the hit as well. The only winner would be Washington.

One assumes that those who vote "yes" are willing to have a windfall profits tax on their own businesses when profits go above a certain amount. We do not discriminate in America do we?

I think so. I think the oil companies made too much money for something that is a important to us. We all need fuel to get back and forth to work and some people drive for a living, it was a huge tax on us when they brought up the prices like they did after the hurricanes hit.

I see a flurry of recent support for a windfall profit tax. To those of you in support I would ask the following: why do you support this? what is a 'windfall'/how would you measure a windfall? how would this help?
I don't see how more taxes answers any problems. I would expect that you would then willingly support a 'windfall' profit on the gain that you'll realize when you sell your house? Real estate has seen extraordinarily strong appreciation over the past few years. I gather that if you claim it is only fair to re-distribute the wealth of the oil company owners (i.e. probably you by way of your 401(k) investments, actually), then it must correspondingly be fair for us to re-distribute the outsized gains you'll see from real estate. After all, a home is a necessity. It's only fair, right?
