LonghornBubba,
If you are waiting for the "Oil Pressure" light to go on... It's too late.
If you are waiting for the the Oil Life Monitor Light to come on and tell you to CHANGE your Oil... That is also to late.
Unless you have a "check" Oil Light... I think you should consider checking your Oil more often.

Just an update on my Dad's Oil/Anti-Freeze problem. He has decided to monitor the problem more closely, but at the moment hasn't decided to reduce his change interval to 2,000 miles (suggested to increase the likely hood of changing "good/OK" Oil and not "it's Oil in name only". I think that is a bad idea... but if he notices his Anti-Freeze level drop he's probably going to have to do something. Changing his Oil at 2,000 miles is going to be cheaper then repairing it at the moment.
So check your Engine Oil and other fluids too! Brake Fluid is a good one. :) Can't do much without that.

You know that Water,Anti-Freeze, and other "undesireable" substances can get into your Oil. If this happens it might be a good idea to check your Oil once and while BEFORE an Oil Change. Catch problems before they become more serious.
Just had my Dad's Oil tested in his '95 GMC Truck. Had the Oil changed at about 3,300 miles. Anti-Freeze is leaking into the Oil and it completely depleted the Oil's Additive Package. I was going to recommend my Dad switch to 5,000 mile intervals... But with the Anti-Freeze problem, that interval would have probably fried his Engine.
Check the condition and level of your Oil regularly. If it looks or smells funny... you might consider getting an Oil Test to see if the issue is effecting your vehicle negatively.

At least every month. Sometimes more. Depends on how much tinkering I'm doing on the car anyway. My two VW GTIs are my hobby, so they get a lot of TLC.
