With so many yes answers, isn't it likely that prices will double. Unless respondents mean some driving, but a lot less buying of petroleum products (beyond the unfortunate fraction of the population that is "priced out") what prevents prices from doubling?

Yes but I would drastically cut down on miles. maybe even consider taking public transportation to work although that would add a lot of time to my day.

dyeh says:

"The fact that so many people will still drive even with double the price of gas means that not enough people feel the pain even at today's gas prices to make a meaningful difference in their driving habits to effect significant decrease in demand."

I think that I have to disagree with your conclusion. I answer yes to this question because I can't think of an alternative that can replace my automobile, but that doesn't mean that I haven't altered my use of it, nor my driving habits.

The fact that so many people will still drive even with double the price of gas means that not enough people feel the pain even at today's gas prices to make a meaningful difference in their driving habits to effect significant decrease in demand. Thus, fuel prices will continue to go higher until the pain gets too great for enough people to cut down or quit altogether.

So, if gas was $4/gal in June of '08, the results of this poll suggest that gas can go all the way to $8/gal and we'll still have people sucking up this stuff as if there was no tomorrow.

Yes. It's not a matter of choice, it's a necessity and the greedy oil companies know it.
