Nevada approves testing of driverless cars on public highways

GasBuddy Blog -- Nevada has issued Google the first license from its Dept. of Motor Vehicles to permit testing driverless vehicles on streets and highways. It's beleived to be the first such license issued anywhere in the U.S.

Nevada's 2011 legislature passed the first law in the nation to permit testing driverless cars, but state regulations do require a human being to be behind the wheel and another in the passenger's seat during tests.

Even in tech movies ( I-Robot, Back to the Future, Star Wars ) driverless vehicles had a driver behind the wheel.

They are not driverless. It says they have a driver in the car. That is like saying I need a permit to use cruze control.

Just what we need, NOT. Another faulty computer program doing things for us. I have never experienced a computer program that did not freeze, crash or just plain f@*$# up. I would rather entrust my life on a computer program.

The only thing new is the approval. Most cars on the road lack a conscious driver.

Liability will still rest with the owner/lessee. So don't think you can worm your way out of this one.

Google should have tested it on the freeways near their Mountain View, California headquarters. Oh, I guess there are smarter than that, probably would not have survived those drivers.

Great You get drunk and the car takes you home so you are not reponsible for anything that happens. How do you sue a driverless car for an accident.

Sensors, cameras, radar, lasers and very accurate GPS needed. Will the driver less car be using Windows software? What if the vehicles computer crashes, is hacked or malfunctions (a backup computer to take over – redundant controls like space shuttle? Develop and test the driver less cars in a real world situation with people. Robot cars have their 'eyes and ears' on at all times and can usually drive much better than a human. Autonomous vehicles can maintain the correct speed, stay in lane, correct spacing between vehicles moving at same speed as other vehicles, higher density traffic using the same highway at the same time so more traffic flows, internet access for vehicle refueling or charging stations, cell phone and TV access and the passenger can do almost anything else waiting to get where they are going. Also, detect people on sidewalks, crosswalks, walking side of roads and bicycles too. There are empty, wide open and long roads in Nevada, do it!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!
