Railroad oil capacity up more than 50 percent

via (AP) The Dickensen Press -- North Dakota’s capacity to export oil by rail has jumped more than 50 percent in June as shippers in the state increasingly turn to mile-long trains to move crude to markets not linked by pipelines.

The increase comes with a pair of crude-to-rail facilities built by Texas companies to move oil from the rich Bakken and Three Forks formations in western North Dakota’s Oil Patch.

Justin Kringstad, director of the North Dakota Pipeline Authority, said the rail terminals bring to 17 the number of facilities built in the state since 2008, as oil drillers have tabbed trains to ship crude due to lack of pipelines or more lucrative markets not served by them.

North Dakota now has the ability to ship at least 470,000 barrels of oil daily by rail, up from about 310,000 barrels. The capacity could

People if this were an employment test and you answered that Warren Buffett or BNSF was the big winner here you would have just scored a big 0 on the test. Canadian National though the old Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific RR and interchange with the old Wisconsin Central control most of the cargoes between the Bakken and Chicago Yards. There to the refineries in the Chicago area is handled locally. BNSF has access to one of the new terminals and ships to Wood River.

Building new refineries in ND makes no sense safety wise because you are pushing hazardous materials, Gasoline and jet fuel, though the lines instead of crude oil which is noncombustible.

If production in the Bakken and the Eagle Ford increase to 1m barrels/day as projected there will be no refining capacity available to process the tar sands. Keystone will become another Bridge to NOwhere. The current loop expansion of Seaway Pipeline and reversal of flow from Cushing to Freeport will eliminate any use for Keystone between Cushing and the Gulf Coast for half the cost.

At 1mbpd the Bakken will need its own dedicated pipeline to the Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio refineries.

For the benefit of those who think Keystone is a good idea , I have the Huey P Long Bridge for sale. As a special offer to posters here I will sell two, one in NO and one in Baton Rouge. for the price of one.

From the article:

"North Dakota, the nation’s No. 2 oil producer behind Texas, produced a record 18.2 million barrels of crude in April, up 10.5 million barrels from the same month a year ago, state records show."

Wow! -- OK, so WHY are we still being gouged over $3.50 per gallon of gasoline at the pump when we have such a surplus?? -- That, with the combined current price of crude at $84 dollars a barrel, means we're being raked over the coals by Big Oil -- once again!!

GOOD! We don't need the Keystone XL pipeline to take Canadian and North Dakota oil to the Gulf Coast where it will be just trans-shipped to the Orient. Trains can take the crude to any refinery that needs it. Then refine the crude in American refineries and keep all of the fuel produced in North America until our prices drop to about $2.509 per gallon for gasoline AND diesel.

We don't need the Keystone pipeline, we already have the Embridge pipeline from Canada to Illinois, Missouri and Cushing Oklahoma.
