Gas prices fall, but your lead foot is still costing you 20 cents more per gallon, experts say

NY Daily News -- Gas prices dropped nationally for the fifth week in a row, says the US Energy Information Administration. We’re now paying an average of $3.70 a gallon, down from $3.94 recorded on April 2nd. Analysts have even backed off on their months-ago predictions of 5 dollars-plus per gallon by summer.

But you’re paying 20 cents more a gallon for gas when you speed, say experts.

Drivers can assume that each 5 MPH they drive above 60 MPH is like paying an additional 20 cents a gallon, according to the Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA). Additionally, aggressive highway behavior such as speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower gas mileage by a whopping 33% at highway speeds and 5% around town.

Truckers, whose profit margin is affected by the cost of gas, have eased up on the

It would cost too much to reinstate a national speed limit of 55. Besides studies showed it only saved 1% of fuel. That was life back in 1974.

Good idea, however driving slower over distance means the engine runtime is longer to cover same distance as well. Engine running = fuel use. More accurate measure is gallons per hour. Need to do math to see what speeds offer the least fuel use for given distance.

Sometimes it's less safe to drive slower.

Most are trying to conserve fuel. Conservation is not enough. Our economy needs the price of fuel to fall.

Another tip - Don't tailgate. This cuts down on the need to "ride the brakes" - another huge gas waster. It's also safer and cuts down on driver stress.

Most roads in the metro DC area are 55, but if you drive 55 then your 20 mph under the flow of traffic.

I don't speed -- the legal limit in WV is 70 on most highways; 65 in OH. Cruise control is great.

It's all a matter of balance and priorities. That extra speed could prevent you from being late to your destination.

Glad to see this in print - "...you’re paying 20 cents more a gallon for gas when you speed..." You'd never know it. We drive the speed limit so we can look around and enjoy the trip, the scenery. But absolutely EVERYONE on the highways pass us! So you speeders, enjoy your spending spree "pedal to the metal and screech to a stop"* at the bank!

Well if I'm paying 20 cents more by not being a lightfoot I was probably paying 21 cents more before when the price was higher.

At least I make a few lights.

I bought something almost 20 years newer with an on board mileage computer.

I thought I was pretty good after 34 years for my front brakes were lasting about 125,000 miles (Back brakes 200,000). When I was a kid, I needed brake work twice as often from too many fast stops and starts. I used to kill engines and transmissions after 200,000 mile...Ah the good old days.

Anyway in 2 1/2 years despite driving well over 600,000 miles in my life, the new beast is still teaching me. I've gone from 6.8 Litres to 6.2 per 100 km. That would be from a little over 35 MPG to a little over 38.

I'm becoming obsessed. Sometimes I get really upset driving in the rain and wasting energy picking up hundreds if not thousands of pounds worth of water with my tires! But then I think again...Well it's at least a free car wash!
