Hydrogen could boost gas mileage in cars; UNF prof skeptical

Florida Times-Union -- With gas prices eclipsing $4 per gallon for the first time since 2008, the technology of hydrogen-to-internal combustion engines is gaining traction.

Littlefoot Integrations run by Vaughn Paul of Bryceville is beginning to make some headway with hydrogen technology he says can increase gas mileage by 30 percent to as much as 70 percent.

Paul bills his device as “water for fuel.” The system he offers — $599 for smaller engines and $799 for engines larger than 5.7 liters — is a hydrogen extraction device that boosts a regular gasoline or diesel-fed engine with hydrogen.

“The goal of the product is to increase gas mileage,” Paul said. “We supplement gasoline or diesel with hydrogen. … It basically creates hydrogen from water.”

Believe it or not, we actually have greater access to oil than we do clean water. Plenty of places in this country have scarce water resources. If we started using vast quantities of drinking water to fuel our vehicles, that means the water wouldn't be there to drink. How much is a 12 oz bottle of Poland Spring? Now imagine buying 20 gallons to fill your car.

The inventor claims that the energy required to split water into hydrogen and oxygen would come from the car's battery. Well that battery needs to be charged by the car's alternator, otherwise that battery will be dead very quickly. The alternator is run by the engine. If the alternator has to run constantly to charge the battery, the engine will have to rev higher to increase the alternator's electricity flow to the battery. If the engine revs higher, the fuel flow will be higher and mileage will decrease. There is no way that enough hydrogen can be produced through electrolysis to make up for the mileage loss. Sorry, everyone. Save your money. There really is no such a thing as a free lunch.
