AMP makes gas-guzzlers into gas-less

Cincinnati.com -- Steve Burns can’t remember the last time he filled up at a gas station. Each day for the past two years he has driven his fully electric Mercedes ML350 SUV to work, back home and to errands in between.

Modified by Loveland-based AMP Electric Vehicles, Burns’ car gets up to 125 miles on a single charge and quietly accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds.

“It’s so great to not pull up to the pump,” Burns said. “I still might stop at a gas station (to buy) other things. People look at me funny when they see my car is electric. They think, ‘What’s he doing here?’”

Burns is founder and president of AMP, which just opened its first dealership in Montgomery. AMP replaces gasoline-engine powertrains on popular model cars with high-tech components, making them 100-percent electric.

Don't use my tax money to subsidize big-a$$ SUV's that only can go 125 miles.

Make those Benz owning idiots pay for it themselves.

Crazy expensive and how much is the electricity?

"AMP vehicles qualify for a $7,500 tax credit from the Internal Revenue Service, reducing the cost of a typical model to about $50,000. AMP is also working on a four-wheel-drive version of its SUVs and a conversion for commercial vans and trucks."

Until the range is 500 miles on a charge through places like the Rocky Mountains; this is a no-go for me. Charging takes too long and increases the demand and price of electricity for all electric users.

if they are replacing the brive train anyway, why can't we just bring a 10 yr old suv for the converson and drive it local trips? that would be a option i would think.

"AMP vehicles qualify for a $7,500 tax credit from the Internal Revenue Service, reducing the cost of a typical model to about $50,000"

Still only goes 125 miles on a charge!

Let's see now - a 1200 mile vacation. the first 120 miles, 2 hours, 6 hrs for charging. 1080 miles to go, the next 120 miles, 2 hours, 6 hrs to chg. 240 miles in 16 hrs. Good thing we slept for 4 hrs that time, 960 miles to go. 2 more hours of travel another 120 miles. A full 24 hours and we have gone 360 miles. Maybe we should have taken the Auto Train.

NO, NOT FOR ME!

Nice to see EVs are becoming available in SUV size --
On the other hand, they are much pricier than either the Volt or Leaf.....

This will take some time before more size and model options become available to us at a much more reasonable price.

Even with a tax credit the car still sells for $50,000. What happens when you need to drive further than 125 miles, you have to make a 6 hour stop to re-charge. I guess you have to have 2 cars one for in town, 1 for trips. Sounds very practical.

If they can make that 125 miles longer, and with more charging stations (and faster charging)...they are definitely on the right track though
