I do not own a ipad, but when i went into the apple store , they recommended you have an apple computer to use as a "docking station" for the ipad, otherwise, it wont work too well. Is this correct info? would like to hear from you ipad owners, to shed some light on this for me

haha! thats a good marketing strategy. (use mac to sync your ipad)...if you have itunes (updated version), you can sync your ipad even though if its a windows pc.

€€Unnecessary to sync after you activate it, and come iOS 5, even that will be unnecessary.€€

Activate is what I meant. An iOS 5 now? Well, I guess I will look into that someday! So many new ones, my May 2010 iPad is starting to feel like a dinosaur...lol

generally you don't need to backup your iOS device, but if it were to fail due to it getting wet, cracking the screen etc, it would be nice to have your stuff backed up and ready to restore once you get your new iOS device :).

I have the Zagg Invisible Shield with anti-glare. I like it.

I have a Zagg LEATHERskin on the back of my iPad, and a Zagg invisibleSHIELD on the front.

Not sure what that has to do with to do with a docking station, though.

As info: The Otterbox Defender offers the highest form of protection available for the iPhone and iPad. These cases will help "ruggedize" your device and they will still look good.

No, I don't work for Otterbox and I'm not in sales. I am just a satisfied customer of this company. oh, by the way - if you have any problem at at with the product Otterbox will replace the part or parts with no questions asked. Great customer service.

I am Posting this message from an iPad and nowhere near a docking station. I have Wi-FI+3G so I can Get online even when I'm not within the range of a Wi-FI "hot spot".

What in the world were they talking about?

The iPad works just fine with Windows, both a Lenovo with Windows Vista and a MacBook Pro running Windows Boot Camp.

One feature that Apple machines have: higher maximum power from a USB port. Most PCs will deliver only 500 mA over a USB port while a recent Mac will deliver 2 A. It takes a long time to charge some Apple portable devices with only 500 mA of power.

I haven't encountered any problems with using iTunes on Windows to sync two iPods (Nano 16 GB and Classic 160 GB) and an iPad. Only trouble is only the main computer and the iPod Classic have enough storage for everything at once. The flash-based devices can only hold about 4000 songs.

Some cities (like Minneapolis, MN) have free Wi-Fi. Minneapolis required a registration with credit card but the card is not charged (except in extraneous circumstances).
Terms and conditions will probably vary by municipality.
My paramour uses the Minneapolis service as her only connection for her MacBook laptop.

The iPad I gave to my brother has been docked exactly one time to activate it and he's been happy with it. He mostly uses it with Wi-Fi at his house, though it has the built-in 3G for when he is out and about.

It is perfectly usable all by itself, provided there is a WiFi signal for it to use to connect to the internet... or you can pay extra for the 3G version, which allows it to connect to the internet anywhere that an AT&T 3G signal is available. (You have to pay extra for the AT&T service, of course.)

I would imagine that if one did not have a computer in his or her home, there probably wouldn't be a WiFi signal in his or her home either (unless the neighbors have WiFi... but using theirs would be stealing). In that case, you would need to pay extra for the 3G version and AT&T service in order to do anything on the internet. Or, if you're on the go a lot and don't want to pay for 3G, you could use it at places that offer free WiFi -- which, in this day and age, number in the tens of thousands.

thanks bmrr, but do you think it would be safe to say, that if one does not have any computer to dock to, then the ipad would not work to well on its own?

The iPad will sync just fine with any Windows computer, as long as you have the appropriate software installed (which is free).
