Got my first bill with tethering implemented.
When you go with the tethering option, the non-tethered data rate goes to $20 unlimited and the first 2 GB of tethered data is also $20.
That should work for what I intend to do with it, reading E-mail on vacation.

I'm hitting 2 maybe 3 gigs a month. (for some reason I hit 4 gigs in May). No tethering anymore though. I just use the phone directly, not hooking it to the laptop anymore.
My carrier has unlimited data, but there are rumors of a 'soft cap' of 5 gigs on the message boards. Some people go way over, hitting 10/12 gigs with no letter from the carrier telling them to cut it out. So might just be a rumor.

I tried it. It lends itself to datawhore potential. I was testing it out and racked up 136 MB of data.
Only 93 MB of non-tethered data so far and I'm roughly a third of the way through my first full month.

No, Mr. Hemond, the iPad is a datawhore. And even with the way I use it (long lunches in places that are dead to WiFi), I hit the 30 days before I hit the 2 GB. Not doing bandwidth-hogging Flash animation will do that for you.
In comparison, the iPhone is a giggly tween that blushes when her Daddy comments about her wearing tarted-up clothing that looks like it came from Victoria's Secret.

My Verizon iPhone apparently will do a mobile hotspot but I have not tried it. So, I can use it to get E-mail and such on the Farm in Missouri using the MacBook Pro. They're close enough to Kansas City that the AT&T 3G will work, at least it did on the "not as reliable on data as the iPad" Samsung. It will switch to EDGE but iPad on EDGE is about as pleasant as having your teeth cleaned.

AT&T called very perplexed that I would change to Verizon. So far, it works on the living room sofa and in the restroom of the local Mexican restaurant where I had my lunch. Two AT&T dead spots.
AT&T had me for quite a while. My number has been ported around quite a bit. It was originally picked up with Sprint, then ported to AT&T, then finally to Verizon. I don't think there's anywhere else left to go unless I go with one of the regional cheapies that don't work on the road.

Verizon finally closed it down on July 5th. It was clearly announced as 'temporary', and temporary it was. Anyone interested in it signed up long ago. Nothing lasts forever. And in tech, nothing lasts 6 months. . AFAIK your only option for an inexpensive unlimited plan (for the moment) is on Sprint or Walmart. They will have to pry my $40 unlimited everything plan out of my dead hands, heyheyhey.

Verizon is changing this! $30 for up to 2gb starting sometime this month and tiered rates for more gb.
Those who already have the $30 unlimited data plan for their smart phones are grandfathered in.

No one is arguing that. What you said was "I use a Bluetooth and almost always talk and surf. I haven't had a dropped call in a long time." . . BT has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with one's connection. That is dependent on the carrier. BT is a short distance radio to connect devices like earphones. It operates over a few feet of distance. BT is not cellular. . . And count yourself lucky if you haven't had a dropped call on AT&T. They are notorious for poor signal/poor reception/dropped calls. The legions of complaints all over the 'net AWA the army of defectors to Verizon attest to that.

We got the 29.99 unlimited data plan when we upgraded to iPhone4's about two weeks ago.
There are so many good things to say about it, but Verizon still will not allow data and phone calls simultaneously. MapQuest will continue to run in the background, mind you; however, you certainly can't open Safari and connect to anything.
BTW, I haven't made a call without BT in almost 6 years; it makes no difference on Verizon's network as far as simultaneous data/voice, even though it is very convenient.

Huh?? How did you determine the poster was referring to maintaining a connection using BT?

Hemond, using a Bluetooth has to do with the fact that it is difficult to talk and surf when the phone is next to your face. I guess you could use speaker phone for all calls.
One of the reasons that many do not talk and surf is that they don't know that they can or aren't using a BT device. When I get a call asking for directions, I'm able to guide them just fine using Mapquest. When I am using my iPhone for GPS in the car in its cradle and I get a phone call, the GPS directions continue without me having to give up one or the other. I've purchased movie tickets while on the phone, made dinner reservations while talking to the person meeting me there and tons more uses for surfing while talking.
How about hold time? No use being bored. I might post a message on Gas Buddy while on the phone. Conference calls? I love them, I'll be answering emails while chatting away. You can even watch a streaming movie while on the phone. You won't be doing that on a Verizon iPhone any time soon.
We drove to WDW recently. For almost the whole trip my daughter was watching Netflix, it worked perfectly. Both my iPad and iPhone have the grandfathered unlimited data plans. I plan to keep those plans for as long as I can.

As for talk and surfing, that might be your need but hardly everyone. In fact you are probably a minority. Some people just use voice, others (teens) just message, others like myself strictly use data, no messaging and almost no voice.

AT&T has never given me a problem, for any of the phones I owned preceding the iPhone, or any of the various models of iPhones I've owned. Nor have any of my family members who "inherit" my old iPhones ever had any issues. And for the better part of the past year, my iPad has been trouble-free as well.
I still remember the time I drove to Las Vegas, talking by phone to my best friend the entire way.

Well, since AT&T can't maintain a decent connection I guess talking and surfing is an exercise in willful determination. I'll stick with my grandfathered $40 unlimited everything plan and not worry about data/minutes/messages/GPS/traffic or getting knocked off constantly.

However, since Verizon can't surf and talk I guess you really won't need that unlimited data plan. I'll stick with my AT&T iPhone which is grandfathered and my grandfathered unlimited iPad plan as well.

The new policy on throttling as detailed first by Gizmodo is... . . Verizon claims 5% of smartphone users are 'heavy' users. These are the folks dl'ing movies, Youtubes and especially the ones who are tethering. Those who exceed whatever is 'heavy' will have their dl speed cut back for the remainder of the current month as well as the next month. . . So, notwithstanding how an 'unlimited' plan can be limited, what does this mean? . . I'm gonna say if you dl, lets say, 10 gigs a month, V is probably not going to give you a hard time. If you are hitting the 50 gig level, V is probably going to flag you. . . A casual user who is just looking at web pages will be hard pressed to even hit the 2 Gig threshold. If you are in addition looking at a bunch of Youtubes, you are probably still going to be ok. . . If you start dl'ing copies of Avatar daily then you may have a problem. Also if you intend to tether, you open yourself up to heavy usage. . . On my carrier (not V) we have unlimited web with an unstated soft cap of 5 Gigs. People on my carrier's forum routinely report hitting 10 to 12 gigs with no notice of exceeding the cap. Since going to a smartphone, I hit maybe 5 to 7 Gigs at most. That includes tethering (although I keep, images/vids/Flash blocked while tethering to keep usage down)

I got unlimited plan which all that's available right now, the girl at the Verizon store said it was going to stay unlimited. I had heard was was going to temporary. It did hear they are going to throttle back on your speed if you're a huge power user of 3G.

They really should be given NKE instead.
Nike has a higher penetration rate in the basketball shoe market than Microsoft has in the desktop operating system market. Nike has three brands out there (Converse, Jordan, and Nike).
Adidas Group has about as much market penetration as MacOS (not the biggest seller, but they aren't going to disappear any time soon) while all the others have tiny market share.

I'm not sure at all that I want any device that may need after-sales support from Wal-Mart. Much less pre-sales support.
On the other hand, if it's like an iPad, you install iTunes on your PC (if it's your first Apple device) and follow the very easy screen prompts.
There are some sales channels out there that (IMHO) will not benefit your product. Among them are Wal-Mart (yes, I shop there; no, I do not find it a particularly pleasant experience).

Not 100% sure what my first stock was, I had Texaco (now Chevron) and Central and Southwest (now American Electric Power) fairly early on.
The first stock I had in a brokerage account was Quest Diagnostics in 2004. My mdoc had me going to LabCorp when she suddenly switched me to Quest instead. It's bad when you go in and say "I've had you before, you're the big curly-headed guy who owns stock in the company!"
