I have a 1999 Alero. My security light comes on upon starting the car, I then have to wait 10 - 12 minutes before it stops blinking so I can start the car. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening or is there something I can do so I don't have to wait so long. Obviously the car in not under warranty.

I had to get a new ignition then it stopped completely. What a pain that was.

I still have this happen occasionally, but rarely. I have found reinserting the key and playing with the key fob(both) sometime will override it.

I was told it was a KEY issue, that the ignition did NOT RECOGNIZE the key and see below another person solved it by getting a fresh new key cut.

Has anyone else found a solution? (or have this problem?)

If you were to purchase a "theft deterrent" device for the car, it bypasses GM's passlock system entirely. We have the system for our Alero. It is an extra step when starting the car but at least you don't have to worry about a flashing security light. At the same time, you won't have to replace the ignition repeatedly...

I had the same problem but what I did was to make a new key . The problem only occurs when the old key is used

"some transistors" is a pretty vauge hint.... gm tech here, you need a pass lock sensor (ignition cylinder).

I had a '99 Grand Am that had the same problem (and it's known to be defective in pretty much all GM cars around the same time). I know it sucks, because I've been late to work and school numerous times because of it! My dad actually fixed it himself, he bought some transistors at Radio Shack and overrode the problem.

If the security light blinks and the car will not start, the device that reads resistance in the key in the passcode system may be defective. It may be an easy fix, but I would consult a factory shop manual to try to determine a cause. It may be somthing they can reprogram with the Tech tool. Maybe the local GM dealer has a manual they can loan you. The same system is also connected to the doors and trunk locks as part of the remote keyless entry. Typically, if one of those locks goes on the fritz, the security light stays on solid.

I have a simular problem, I did something (a specific combination of things) once that overid the Security "wait", can't remember what they were at the moment. Did you ever find out why this occurs?? I turn off ignition, wait 6-10 mins and it will start, appearantly the security didn't properly detect that the key was inserted and that the wasn't being stolen.

With the key on, the security light will flash. Let it flash for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes of flashing it will either be on steady, or go out completely. At that point turn the key off, and proceed to start the vehicle normally.

This resets the security system in the computer. The information above is actually in your owners manual. You have to wait that 10 minutes because no thief would wait that long to steal your car. You on the other hand will.....so it makes you wait. Hope this helps! If all else fails after that, take it to your local GM dealership I read somewhere if the reset procedure doesn't work then it is malfunctioning and requires service. I own a 2000 Olds Intrigue with the same kind of security system as your Alero.
