Hey, I recently bought a used one and it's great so far. Just wondering if anybody who owns one of GM's 3.4L sixes has had any engine problems, you know like manifold or head gasket?

i'm driving a 98 Shilouette.. about 30000km a year (240000+) maintenance costs have been brakes, rear(air) shocks. Find it to be very good on gas especially for a van with lots of room and capacity. I'm hoping for at least 2 more years before replacement. No engine issues.. sparkplugs are a bitch to change-- but are good for 100K at least.

overall...I'm pleased

I own a 97 Olds Siohouette and I love it. It has been a very good vehicle. I have not had any major trouble so far. Just your normal stuff. The air went out last week and had to put a compressor, dryer, orifice tube in it, other than that it has been good. Mine has the 3.4 engine. The 97 is the first body change that came out. I hate that GM quit making Olds. Right now I have 140,000 miles on the van.

I've owned both a '99 and an '02 Silhouette. I changed the '99's lower intake manifold gasket at about 97,000 miles. I did the job myself. It was leaking coolant into the engine and outside. It has about 107,000 miles on it now. The A/C quit too, but that's all the problems I've had with it. On the '02, the driver's seat heater failed, which I had fixed under warranty.

capcottage,

Looking at this again, I assumed you said you bought an Alero though you might have meant a Silhouette. I don't believe the dash issue affected the minivans though I believe they use the same window regulators. Haven't heard many other issues with the minivans.

The 3.4 is essentially the same in both models with some minor differences which are irrelevent for discussion here. The motor is pretty solid and I haven't found a single person who's had issues with that engine under normal maintenance.

Good luck with whichever car you bought.

capcottage,

Unfortunatley, the moment GM anounced that they were pulling the plug on the Olds brand, the resale values for all newer Olds dropped tremendously. People freaked about it but GM will continue to support these cars and the quality of the cars has not suddenly decreased just because Olds itself is not around.

As for issues with Aleros, for the 2001 and newer models the things to look out for are:
1) the dashboard skin wrinking behind the instrument panel. (Merely cosmetic issue. Instruments not affected.)
2) window regulators breaking (They are inside the door panels and help raise and lower the windows. They are covered under the warranty.)
3) some have noted a bad wheel hub (bearing case) though this is not very common

I personally have only experienced the 1st 2 problems. The cars are actually very well built. If you have any other questions about maintenance, repairs, improvements, or modifications, I recomend going to:

www.aleromod.com

It is a site run by Alero owners for Alero owners and it's free to join. I'm a moderator there. I go by the handle "Daytona".

I have the same vehicle. I also bought my used over 2 years ago. I have not any major problems, knock on wood, so far. Just typical maintenance stuff.

I am concerned now that Oldsmobile folded up. I wonder what resale will be like now.

Have you heard of major problems going on with this vehicle?

I have a 2002 Olds Alero with the 3400. No problems like that for me. I did have 5 of my 6 plug wires suddenly go bad at the same time 2 weeks ago and I only have 40,000 miles on the car. The rest of the engine's been solid. I kow a few others with the same engine and they haven't had any issues with them either.
