June 8, 2012; Our Fair City – Tom and Ray Magliozzi, aka Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers, the comedian mechanics who host NPR's Car Talk, will tell their listeners this afternoon that as of this fall, they'll no longer record new programs. But their weekly call-in series will continue to be distributed by NPR drawing on material from their 25 years of show archives.

"My brother has always been 'work-averse,' " says Ray, 63. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him!"

"It's brutal!" adds Tom, 74.

The brothers have been taping Car Talk at WBUR in Boston for 35 years, and the show has been a staple on NPR Member stations for the last 25 years. With older brother Tom turning 75 this year, the guys decided it was time to "stop and smell the cappuccino."

Alas, the only show on National Progressive Radio worth listening to is gone!

They gave us a lot of years of entertainment and advice. My favorite show was when a lady called for advice if she should ask her mechanic to cease giving her ex-boyfriend a discount on car repairs. The reason why is because she saw him with another guy. Tom and Ray got her mechanic on the air and he said that he'd start charging the slime ball double. HA! HA!

This great show will be missed for sure, but I'll still listen to the re-runs.

Knew this had to happen, but this is my favorite hour of radio each week.

I still remember the caller who had a VW with 60K miles on it, called in to complain it was running rough and smoking.

Click and Clack asked her when she last changed the oil. She responded that she had never changed it--bought the car 5 years earlier and had never changed the oil.

Their advice--put a "for sale" sign in the window and take any reasonable offer.

They're going to play old shows from the archives. I'm glad the younger generations will have access to Click and Clack.

They hosted a great show. I would have preferred that it was not aired on NPR which has no right to even exist using public funds. Much of the programming on NPR was more than capable of succeeding on a commercial station and it was my desire to see Public Radio disbanded; allowing those programs which were worthy to find a commercial sponsor and forcing the others to fade into oblivion. But there's no question about the quality of their show.
