There are currently 192 plants in production that have a combined annual output total of over 12.7 billion gallons. Additional plants will come online this year bring the total to over 14 billion gallons.

Plus............U.S. ethanol production reached yet another all time high in December 2009 at 787,000 barrels per day (b/d), according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). That is an increase of 131,000 b/d from December 2008.

Despite trying economic circumstances, America’s ethanol producers once again rose up to meet the challenges the nation has put before it,” said RFA President Bob Dinneen. “Moving forward, once-idled facilities are restarting and new biorefineries are coming online to ensure that the volumes of ethanol called for in the Renewable Fuels Standard are met by domestic supplies.”

June 29, 2010) WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. ethanol production fell slightly in April. According to information from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), April 2010 ethanol production averaged more than 832,000 barrels per day (b/d). That is down from 847,000 b/d in March.

Ethanol demand, as calculated by the Renewable Fuels Association, reached an all time high at 834,000 b/d in April, up from 673,000 b/d a year ago.

As the RFA recently reported, America is exporting ethanol at record rates. According to data from the Dept. of Commerce, Census Bureau, and the Dept. of Agriculture Foreign Ag Service, the U.S. exported 40.8 million gallons of ethanol in April.

Are new cars being built to use E85 or do they need modifications?

Well there are two known ethanol producers that make their own E85, Renew (Formerly Utica) and Smart, both based in Wisconsin. They do have some of the lowest E85 prices in the state.

Today there are reports of US becoming cheaper and bigger exporter than Brazil. Pity that we are not able to use it here ... Now is the time for increasing the e85 sales and ethanol companies should entice ppl by giving e85 real cheap.

"no more subsidies for ethanol or fossil fuels."

Brilliant idea! Bring on the $3.00 ethanol and $10.00 per gallon gasoline.

I get to use my 60% mix often and I wish I could use it non stop. I know MFA and Kum n Go do a great job of providing good and reasonable ethanol. Most times its .50 to .60 cheaper than gas. To me its well worth the use, after 4 yrs running this mix both my cars still run great, no issues and I just love its performance.

I believe ethanol should not be produced or used just as mixing fuel for gas. If the ethanol companies follow that they are at the mercy of Big oil. The moment the demand for oil goes down ethanol goes bust . Ethanol should be sold parallel to gasoline. Oil companies try to grab all the money they can from federal govt but if ethanol cant resist oil they are inviting problems for the long run ...

SS70: Here is one thing to ponder for awhile. Only two ethanol companies in America are blending and selling their own E85. To me that is the way to go. It is only then that an ethanol company can take advantage of the blenders credits.

If you will compare prices you will see that E85 sold direct by ethanol companies are some of the lowest prices in America. Wonder why that would be so?

I am not sure about Valero. Has anyone seen E85 at any of their stations? They do no have any stations around here.

"Some of the midwestern states are producing enough ethanol to fuel every car in their states on 100% ethanol, just not ethanol blends."

This where i believe they should also take lead in e85 consumption. If you can see these states have thousands of place wher ee85 can dispensed then we are our way to ethanol economy ...

Plants that went under? Most of them have been bought out and reopened.

Some are being refitted and new plants are nearly finished and will soon open.

"Ethanol has not been shown to replace gasoline quite yet."

There are plenty of folks that beg to differ on that opinion. Some of the midwestern states are producing enough ethanol to fuel every car in their states on 100% ethanol, just not ethanol blends.

In Brazil there are already fueling all cars with 25% to 100% ethanol. Guess what, it works just fine.

aRBy: I am not sure of the exact number of ffvs. The last count I had was over 7 million. GM had pledged to make all of their future cars ffvs. I am not sure if they are on track with that statement or not.

It is quite easy to convert any car to a FFV. You can do this by adding a module or by increasing the injector size and/or adding a fuel pump.

It is interesting, for those that I have talked to that has converted to a ffv actually get better mileage than a standard ffv.

Goldseeker:

Thanks for posting this.

It's all well and fine to see more ethanol production coming on line. It's even better to see it coming on steadily instead of spasmodically like it did a few years ago.

I'd like to ask you a favor. So much is written about SUPPLY of ethanol; more plants etc. Do you have or can you get figures on how many flex fuel vehicles (labeled as such) are on the road now? Can you tell me how many vehicle model types sold in America are now flex fuel?

It seems to me that I'm seeing more and more flex fuel labels on cars these days. First of all, I think that's a great thing. But more important, I think the growth in the flex fuel vehicle fleet has a LOT to do with why ethanol production continues to grow even in this recession.

Wadda ya think?

I know where there is a 100 million gallon plant laying on the ground in pieces. Never was finished. I keep watching to see who (if any) finishes it.

Federal law requires gasoline companies to significantly increase the number of gallons of ethanol they use in their gasoline over the next few years. This means that the most efficient ethanol producers will have a guaranteed market, regardless of the cost to the customer/taxpayer. This also may be the reason that oil companies like Valero have been buying up bankrupt ethanol producers.
