no more subsidies for ethanol or fossil fuels. support only fundamental research in all energy resources, including efficiency and conservation life-styles.

"Moreover, this demonstrates a point I've been making for a long time. It's a lot easier to expand the fuel supply by distilling more ethanol than it is by increasing petroleum refining."

Sure, as long as you have the taxpayer paying for it...

Not sure how much of ethanol Valero would sell as e85. I hope they would not go after jusr mixing 10 or 15% depending on feds. I hope they will put Blender pumps in atleast few places .

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Valero isn't the biggest petroleum company.

Moreover, this demonstrates a point I've been making for a long time. It's a lot easier to expand the fuel supply by distilling more ethanol than it is by increasing petroleum refining. This is especially true since there are ethanol distilleries that can be bought cheaply right now.

mus302 says "I guess by your logic if Valero bought a wildlife conservation area then big oil/wildlife conservation one in the same?"

Good point. SuperAmerica owns their own bakery, so big oil and big food must also be the same by RedRider's logic.

Valero is probably assuming the federal laws on ethanol use as fuel will not change.

Current laws require the oil companies to increase the total amount of ethanol used as fuel over time and the law does not give consideration to the ethanol price. If the law does not change, the oil companies will be forced to buy the ethanol no matter what the price and they will just pass the cost on to the public. If oil companies also own much of the ethanol plants, they can charge high prices for the ethanol and Congress will force us to pay it in order to get gas.

They are not just in Ethanol for fun.
They think there is profit, perhaps they know what they are doing...

Most of the start-up companies that went into the fuel ethanol area knew nothing about running a business and thus went bankrupt.

Valero believes they will eventually be able to run them at a profit. The other option would be to tear down the plants and sell them as scrap but that would mean that there would not be much ethanol available in the future.

They will profit from both ends and lower their own operating costs

Some areas already require the use of E10 and federal government passed laws that require increased consumption over the next few years of ethanol as fuel. Since there is a guaranteed market for a certain amount of ethanol and ethanol competes with the gasoline they produce in their refineries, Valero is guaranteeing their ethanol supply and that they will benefit if increased ethanol use displaces some of their sale of normal gasoline.

Valero is gambling, 7 come on 11. No its a total of 10 now I think. They are counting on getting all the government subsidies plus the pay out to mix it with their gasoline. These mandates were increased by George Bush for the coming years. Valero got the other seven plants for just a fraction of their cost to build something like just a third.
