AMES, Okla. — An Oklahoma corn farmer has built an ethanol-fueled Ford Mustang that hit a speed of 252.78 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Just goes to show that properties associated with ethanol provides you with a means to produce gobs of horsepower.

More of the taxpayers money going to support a farmers toy habit! By the way he raises wheat and livestock, that is if he farms on his own. He also received $25,244.00 in subsidies.

BS Tomintx! I have a stock 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 and I run E85 at times. When I do, I have more torque and HP than I do with straight unleaded. Its about 6-10% more depending on what I am doing. I do get about 85% of the MPG of unleaded even though E85 has only 72% of the energy content and is usually priced at 72% of unleaded. Thus I go farther on a dollar with E85 than on unleaded. Its even worse when you substitute RFG for unleaded. RFG gets about 95% of unleaded MPG and usually costs more to boot.

If you aren't getting the HP of unleaded, then you likely are running way way too lean which would force you to a lower gear losing MPG as well. Most fuel injected cars can compensate for this like mine does. I still get a fuel system too lean EEC code from time to time, but the engine runs great.

Therefore its your vehicle that isn't like most on the road. Most get more HP with E85 in their modern fuel injected cars and trucks.

"E85 might allow an engine to create more power in a Koenigsegg but it does it by allowing for higher compression, which allows for the consumption of a bunch more fuel. "

I would be interested to see your "science" behind that one tomintx.

Indy cars and some sprint cars have been running on ethanol for years and years.

tomintx - Higher compression makes more power by increasing thermal efficiency, not by letting the engine use moe fuel. Do you have any idea what the compression ratio is of a diesel engine compared to a gas engine?

The world's leading ethanol shill has stated: "This thread has nothing to do with fuel economy. Here is what the farmer said. 'Brent Hajek wants to show the world fuel containing 85 percent ethanol doesn't cut performance.' And he certainly proved his point."

I re-state my position. E-85 cuts performance in EVERY DAY CARS USED BY EVERY DAY PEOPLE. I do not have a 10,000 horsepower race car, and I do not want one.

E85 might allow an engine to create more power in a Koenigsegg but it does it by allowing for higher compression, which allows for the consumption of a bunch more fuel.

I drive a Volvo. I want to get more fuel economy, and I want to spend less money. I don't want my tax dollars going to fund some lobbyist's lifestyle. And a 10,000 HP Mustang is 100% pointless to the ethanol discussion.

Ethanol is a wasted effort. Money and efforts expended spent to develop ethanol is money and efforts that are taking us FARTHER away from an eventual true alternative energy source. Ethanol does not now, nor has it ever, saved a single drop of oil.

We were getting awesome power out of running pure alcohol in the 60's. The basic engine change was to drill out a set of jets so that great amounts of alcohol were dumped into the engine when the light turned red. Then get the compression up to about 14:1 and use the wildest full race cam you could get your hands on so the alcohol would burn. (Often ran 24 volts through a 12-volt starter so it would start.) You ran 1/4 mile and were towed back to the pit to refuel

But that is of no relevance when it comes to efficiency on a low compression grocery getter.

Hey, I don't begrudge you your hot-rod. Auto racing has driven technical innovation since the invention of the horseless contraption. A friend once summed up life with this: Every man needs his horse.

This is not news. Race cars run on Ethanol. It gives more power but uses more fuel/mile.

"No thank you. I would rather have something more practical, like a Mini Cooper or a Toyota Tacoma, run on 100% fossil fuels, no ethanol blend of any kind. "

I suppose you will just stay at home when the fossil fuels are gone.

And your point is? How does this relate to real-world efforts to reduce fuel costs or consumption?

Using massive amounts of fuel to produce loads of power means what?
