I had just passed the Sam Houston Tollway & was enjoying the calm of the night with my cruise control. I passed by a DPS unit in the median & paid him no mind. 2 minutes later, he apparently came speeding up behind me (and indubitably being far more dangerous than I was going 5 over) and lit me up. DPS is revenue generating, I thought? That's weird. So I just pulled over & gave him all my information, nothing strange. Asks me where I was coming from & where I was going, who I was visiting. Asked me if I were with a male or female. Now THAT is a strange question. Then he told me that I was speeding in a 60 mph zone. RED FLAG. He was sitting in a clear 65-mph zone. The officer walks away & goes back to his car. He comes back & this time says it was a 65-mph zone & he was giving me a written warning. So that was certainly interesting. I had never received one before, I had always gotten revenue-generating tickets. Then again, this was also the first time I had been pulled over by a DPS Trooper. Have you ever been pulled over for 5 mph over in Houston? I have a feeling that this occurred to me because it was 1 AM, I was the only car in sight, pretty much, and he was bored. Plus, fishing for DUIs. Oh, well. It was an interesting experience and it certainly warms my heart to know that not all law enforcement consists of revenue generators. Great news! However, have you or anyone you know ever been pulled over for driving 5 mph or so over?

So what happened? Phantom black-and-white signs? Something else? It wasn't a poor memory because I remember the entire night VERY vividly....but perhaps I was wrong....my mind playing tricks on me. Who knows? I shall report back on Friday or Saturday.

I'll be driving the same route on Friday (the 13th) so I'll check much more carefully then.

It was a written warning. That being said, I am BEYOND 100% sure that the speed limit changed to 65 where I said it did. I clearly remember accelerating the cruise control from 65 in the 60-zone to 70 in the 65-zone. I'll be in Houston again at the end of next week, so I shall be sure to check what you wrote here and reply back.....if I can remember it, haha!

That's 'cause the speed limit on I-10 does not go up from 60 to 65 until you cross over the Houston city limit, and that's at about the Barker-Cypress Road exit. Barker-Cypress is seven exits west of the beltway (Sam Houston); something like eight miles. I drove that stretch twice in the last couple of days, so I'm pretty sure of that...

My opinion is that his primary purpose was checking for DUI. I've never gotten a written warning in TX, but I lived on the east coast for several years, and got one there. It was only a few miles from the sign that says, "No Warnings." I also had an officer there warn me using the speaker on his cruiser that the speed limit was 55 mph (and I was doing 60 when he said it). Of course I slowed right down for him.

Thanks for sharing! Let's hope these things never happen to any of us ever again! Especially the "I'd have ticketed you if you didn't have your baby daughter in the car with you" argument. Wouldn't it make more sense to ticket if you did have a baby daughter? AKA, endangering her safety at the oh-so-horrific speed of 5 mph over the limit? Just ridiculous.

Back in the early '90s, I was pulled over by DPS for 2-over on the Gulf Freeway. Was on FM2100 where it turns to FM1485 out between Huffman/New Caney area. Was in the middle of the day, and was moving some things from my in-laws, and had my cruise set about 5 over. Trooper was heading the opposite direction as I was, and quickly turned around and came and nailed me. Was just me and my baby daughter in the truck, and said that he was just going to let me off with a warning since it was so hot out (he made me turn the truck off), and I had a baby with me. He said that otherwise, he'd given me a ticket for speeding.......even though it was 4-5 over.
