New Posting Guidelines!

Posting Addresses with Prices:

To ensure that station addresses will be mappable in both the websites AND mobile applications, we respectfully request you please provide a combo of both the exact address and the cross street when listing station addresses. If no cross street is available, please use the exact address and provide the nearest cross street. Also, we prefer street names to interstates and routes.

[example]
123 Main St & Cross St

OR

[example]
123 Main St Near Cross St

If you've provided the exact address and cross street/nearest cross street, and the station still isn't mapping, there's a possibility it may not be entered into the Master Station List yet. In these sitations, use the tools available in the MSL to see if the station is listed (senior users only, 10 000+ points with a car icon), or ask a senior member to check for you.

Senior Users (10 000+ points with a car icon): When adding a station into the station database, alternative street names can be included in the Master Station List and can be added in their appropriate fields (these of which are not visible on the site with price reports, but are handy to have in the database to avoid duplicate listings). If there is an alternative street name, please include this with your station submissions. ie. If Main St is also known as US-1, please enter the Address as 123 Main St, with US-1 in the Alternate Name for Street field.

Though exits may be a definable landmark when it comes to giving directions, these are often not recognized by mapping applications as locations with geocodes. With this in mind, please do not include exits as station addresses, feel free to include them in the comments field of your reporting ie. Shell, 123 Main St & Cross St (Exit 49A)

=====

Posting Highways, please use this format:

I-**
US-**
AL-**

=====

Posting Station Names:

Please list stations by the name they are known locally. Alternative station names can be included in the Comments field when reporting prices, but this is not required.

We ask that stations be listed by their most recognizable name. For example, when someone sees the station for the first time, what is the name they will be looking for?

For example, if there is a station in your area known as "Bob's Auto" that happens to sell CITGO fuel, but the station doesn't prominently display the brand of fuel, just list the station name as "Bob's Auto".

Also, we ask that station names not be "personalized", as in "Love's Store # 234" or "Dave's Sunoco". In these cases, please just use "Love's" and "Sunoco", respectively.

Alternative station names can still be listed in the Comments field. For example.

Price: 3.50
Station: Sunoco
Address: 123 Main St & Cross Ave
Comments: Dave's Sunoco

Comments display in parentheses after station address, in the price lists. Like this:

3.50
Sunoco
123 Main St & Cross Ave (Dave's Sunoco)

=====

Posting Member Prices or Discounts:

Please post the price before discount because not everyone, especially visitors to the area are eligible for the discounts. You can still provide the information, but please enter the information in the Comments field which will appear within () in the address line, like this:

[example]
2.29 Safeway
123 Main St & Cross St (-5 cents with card)

The REGULAR PRICE is listed, and the discount information is in the address line for those eligible. Members using the discount will have to do their own math, and anything within () in the address line is ignored by the duplicate checker, and does not affect the system or mapping.

Member prices can be posted if no non-member price is available. However, you should state whether or not it's a member price, and add this in the Comments field which will appear within () in the address line, like this:

[example]
Sam's Club
123 Main St & Cross St (member price)

If there is a discount offered at the pump, but the sign price is higher, please post the price listed on the sign, and add the pump price in the Comments field.

=====

Posting Cash/Credit Prices.

Differences in cash/credit prices are common in some areas as a result of stations needing to offset the additional costs of credit/debit transactions.

When reporting prices for stations in areas that have different prices based on method of payment, we ask that you post the cash price where it exists. Because GasBuddy is intended to help our users find the lowest prices, in areas where cash/credit prices are applicable, ultimately the cash price is the lowest price. If the station does not offer a cash price, then the standard price should be reported.

The Comments field may be used to include a note about cash/credit prices, but this is not required.

[example]
3.50
Valero
123 Main St & Cross St (credit +5c)

=====

Font Casing:

We ask that you capitalize only the first letter of each word, unless it's a highway, like "US-2". The system is not currently smart enough to see "main st" and "Main St" as the same thing. The same applies to station names. Any difference can cause duplicate listings of the same station.

*****The Comments field should ONLY be used for additional directional info, alternative store names, or discount information only. If you wish to discuss gas prices, please use the forums. Abusing the comments field may result in an account suspension.

Agree with RoadRunnerCH Houston. Stripes stations post regular cash and credit prices on their signs which are also posted on the pumps. To see the other cash prices you have to look at the pumps. An even lower cash Stripes card price is available if you walk inside and put money on a Stripes cash card with either your credit/debit card or with cash. This price only shows on the pump for all fuel grades when you insert the Stripes cash card and is 10cents less per gallon until mid September, 2014. Houston's lowest gas prices don't reflect these prices and neither does the GASBUDDY site. My bottom line is the cheapest price at a clean station with no gas contamination to damage my vehicle.

I have to agree with FrijoleBreeze on the Cash/Credit issue (I have also heard about the cash discount policy elsewhere, and that it stems from anti-bait & switch statutes). If you read CC's guidelines clarification with that policy in mind, the clarification seems to contradict itself.
In the Posting Member Prices or Discounts section, it says to post the higher price, which is generally the price on the pump before the discount card is applied.
However, in the Posting Cash/Credit Prices section, it says to post the *discounted* price, even though in the stations I have seen that use cash discount prices, the pumps display the standard (credit) higher price until the discounted payment method is specified.
But, here's why this thread caught my attention. As I understand it, the cash/credit pricing isn't totally kosher in Texas. To get around the issue, some stations give discounted pricing if you purchase their cash card (which you can buy with a credit card). This sticks in my craw for several reasons, the top of which is the inconvenience...instead of jumping out and pumping, you have to go in, wait in line, etc.. plus you have to track how much is left on the card - Do I have enough? Do I have to reload? Oh, and the bonus pain in the rear - if you have cash, they still want you to buy a cash card to get the lower price.
Anyway, I've noticed that sometimes people update with the Cash Card price, but not always.. most of the time, the standard price is posted. It probably doesn't help that both prices are listed on the station signage.

Interesting… So the rules have changed and we no longer highlight the credit card price… Well it took me four years to find this out but I'll start doing it the new way LOL

I don't understand posting the 'cash' price, because that is not the price. I was told by a retailer in no uncertain terms that it is illegal to add a surcharge to someone paying by credit. But, in the spirit of our legal system's love of loopholes, it is perfectly legal to provide a discount for using cash. If that is the case, credit is technically the official price. We wouldn't want to infer that these stations that love to take us for all we have are doing anything criminal in that process.

That is helpful. It defeats the purpose if the lowest price isn't listed, be it cash or CC

I recently contacted the moderators about the posting of cash/card discount prices after being made aware by another member that the stated policy in the Andriod app. asked for the posting of cash/card prices rather than the regular price. Below is the response I received from CC which states that GasBuddy.com has changed it's policy in regards to this:

"GasBuddy's goal is help everyone make wise fueling decisions.

The policy for reporting cash/credit prices has recently been changed to better suit the areas where this information is important.

When reporting prices for stations in areas that have different prices based on method of payment, we ask that you post the cash price where it exists. If the station does not offer a cash price, the standard price should be reported.

The Comments field may be used to include a note about cash/credit prices, but this is not required.

Information entered in the Comments field will be shown within parentheses () after the station address.

Since GasBuddy consists of mobile apps for several platforms and 200+ websites, it will take us some time to update the Price Posting Guidelines throughout our system, as these have to be done manually, one-at-a-time. Thanks for your patience.

Let me know if you have any further questions or problems.

Regards,

CC
GasBuddy.com"

2labz,
You are posting correctly. The site moderators ask that you post the regular (credit) price, then note any cash or card discounts on the comment line.
See paragraph above: "If there is a discount offered at the pump, but the sign price is higher, please post the price listed on the sign, and add the pump price in the Comments field."

Is there a protocol for posting the difference between cash and credit prices? I've been posting the credit card prices and putting the cash price in the comments - should it be the other way round?

Thanks

Why are "visitors" allowed to post gas prices.
If they screw up there is no one to blame.

A visitor posted the discount price instead of the regular price.
I drove halfway across town thinking I was getting a good deal when I arrived at the station I noticed the price was higher.

All you have to do is follow the guidelines and it tells you exactly what the address is that you are trying to report.

so does anyone who actually buys gas there or posts the prices there on a regular basis object to the mods or who-ever changing the location of the Valero, Shell, and Kroger stations on the corner of Will Clayton and atascocita Road to the atascocita area where they belong. The corner is two (2) miles OUTSIDE the humble city limits, is serviced by the constables, the sheriff, and the atascocita Volunteer fire department. The businesses in this location have nothing to do with Humble other than a federal government zip code, which calls all of atascocita, clear to the lake, and most of Kingwood, Humble. So can the mods or whoever please change these to atascocita. This would seem to be in line with the guidelines that state they are to be listed by actual area, not by some arbitrary federal zip code.
Thanks

CC that's all great, but the problem I'm seeing is that even though the Alternate fields are populated in the MSL, if I change my FSL to the advised format below, the MSL warns me it's "Changed" and tries to revert back.

That and how do we notify those who don't visit these boards on a regular basis, so we can keep the consistancy???

Sometimes you just can't win!
Member cozzie23 took this useful information and then listed their station (NEIGHBORHOOD in Pasadena) FOUR times! Simply by changing from capital to lower case letters.
