I would commute to work by bike if I wasn't afraid of getting run over.

Well, I guess you can try riding in an enclosed shopping mall perhaps. I hear they open them up to walkers early in the morning, so you likely won't get kicked out.

Lets face it, weather happens. Sounds like you may be living in too warm of a state. Personally , I rather be out and about in hot weather than cold. Over 100 degrees beats 5 degrees in my book. (other than snow sports that is heyheyhey)

I walk everyday and I also use the bike for exercise, however I am retired and don't have to drive to work each day now, thank goodness.

Just did one of the big state bicycle rides in the southeast. A couple of thousand riders. It hit over 100 degrees during the day. About 400 miles or so total. A lot of it above 100 degrees. Like anything else, you get used to it. I tried getting started just at dawn to beat most of the heat.

Been a hard core bicycle rider/racer/distance tourist since the teen years and never really had a problem. I ride maybe 2000 miles a year, all of it on roads and in traffic. I've ridden in most major cities including Manhatten, Montreal, Toronto, Tampa/Ste Pete, Seattle and Los Angeles. I've commuted to my job regularly, - about 25 miles round trip.

Its easy to ride in traffic. You can see and hear, cars from a mile away. They make a lot of noise. I use a rear view mirror, stay out of the way and keep an eye open for Winnebagos. (Most RVers are inexperienced with just how wide they are, I often get off the road when an RVer is approaching - they are simply too dangerous. )

My coworker was killed by a F150 driver who elected not to share the roadway with bicycles.

I tried biking to work one summer and was almost hit numerous times. Never again would I even consider biking to work.

Great idea but I'm 35 miles to work, one way. I have mine set up with racks and a lock for short hauls to the grocery store, bank, swimming pool, etc.

Check Google Maps' "bike" option, there might be some calmer side roads or backroads, depending on where you live. If there's a local bike club in your area, they may have helpful suggestions on commuting routes.

There are also mirrors that attach to your helmet or sunglasses, you can see who's coming over your shoulder. Definitely helps with confidence in traffic.

I ride mine almost daily ,mostly short trips across the neighborhood, farther is risky because of nutty traffic, drivers don't car how close they come at high speeds near you when passing/mowing/walking nowdays!

I use mine to run most errands. Fortunately, I work at home and don't have to commute.
